    The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS) will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 12 – 3 pm at the shelter location, 815 South State Highway M533, Gwinn.   UPAWS will be hosting a celebration party in the community room with snacks and an anniversary cake. The new “A Minecraft Movie” will begin at 12:45pm in the Community Room – popcorn provided during the movie (or kids are welcome to bring a snack or lunch) and make Minecraft Self Portraits while you watch the movie! Drop-in activities will run from 12-5 in the kids’ room, including LEGO building Minecraft style in the Makerspace and building with big blocks in the Great Room.  No admission charge.

    Coat the Copper Country. The winter wear drive is underway with collection boxes at local businesses and churches. We are also accepting winter wear and monetary donations at the Angel Mission Free Store, 433 5th St, Calumet, MI 49913. We will offer two days for our initial winter-wear giveaway. The first is for children notified by the schools to participate in the program. Those children had opportunity to pre-register for the program and will pick up items at The Salvation Army in Hancock on Friday, October 24, 4:00-8:00, pre-registration is required.   • Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission Quarterly Meeting

    The Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission will convene for its regular quarterly meeting at 1:00pm on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. The meeting will be held in-person at the Village of Calumet/Calumet Theatre third floor ballroom. The meeting will include an update on the work of the Commission during the last quarter, discussion of the upcoming year’s budget and plans and projects to be undertaken over the next year. Due to the ongoing government shutdown, the National Park Service will NOT be taking part in this meeting. However, questions, requests, and comments from members of the public are welcomed.
