The Keweenaw is getting a new stage this spring with the debut of Keweenaw’s Got Talent, a community talent showcase and fundraiser set for Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Rachel Marie Blau Memorial Theater inside the Hancock Community Hub. Inspired by the energy of America’s Got Talent, this first-time event will bring together music, dance, comedy, and creative performances from across the region in a wholesome, family-friendly setting. Are they universal tools that carry the same meaning and purpose for all, or are they personal reminders of a loved one or shared experience? Could they be all these things and more? For artist Emily Lanctot, they are the subject and inspiration for her exhibition “Salaiset Ruokaohjeet: Secret Recipes” which will be displayed at Finlandia Art Gallery February 5 through March 5, 2026. Most of the paintings in this exhibition are based on recipes Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present “A Streetcar Named Desire,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams, Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 19-21 and 26-28, in the Panowski Black Box Theatre. The show will be directed by assistant professor Kaitlyn Frotton. First performed in 1947, “A Streetcar Named Desire” is about the fragile Southern belle Blanche DuBois. She moves in with her sister Stella and brutish brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski in New Orleans, leading to a tragic clash of illusion and reality, desire and class. Barnes-Hecker Digitization Days poster The Barnes-Hecker Mine Disaster occurred on November 3, 1926. Fifty-one men lost their lives; forty-one of them are still buried at the site of the cave in. To commemorate the 100th anniversary, the Marquette Regional History Center will host Digitization Days, where community members can receive free digital scans of their documents and photographs pertaining to the mine, employees, family members, and friends. These scans will be added to the Longyear Research Library’s digital collections for future generations to learn from. On Tuesday, March 24, the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country will emphasize the call for Equal Pay for Women by distributing cookies, oranges, and information on the Michigan Tech campus. League members and volunteers will wear red and gather at the Husky statue from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Red symbolizes that women and people of color are “in the red” when it comes to equal pay for equal work. The Barnes-Hecker Mine Disaster occurred on November 3, 1926. Fifty-one men lost their lives; forty-one of them are still buried at the site of the cave in. To commemorate the 100th anniversary, the Marquette Regional History Center will host Digitization Days, where community members can receive free digital scans of their documents and photographs pertaining to the mine, employees, family members, and friends. Press Release Negaunee Ice Arena Tours City Manager Nate Heffron is announcing two tours of the Negaunee Ice Area for both the public and media to attend. The purpose of the tours will be to reveal designs for the proposed ice arena overhaul, which is needed to keep the facility operational to facilitate updates and repairs. Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week online workshop, designed for the non-professional, informal family caregiver, will be held on Thursdays, March 19 through April 23, from 1:30 – 3:00 pm (Eastern) via Zoom. Research studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The French Program at Northern Michigan University will host “The Croissant: A Pastry Talk & Tasting” from 1:30-3 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in the Whitman Hall Commons.
