(ISHPEMING, MI) – This September, the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library invites you to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month and discover how a single card can open the door to endless opportunities. The Finlandia Art Gallery and Finlandia Foundation National (FFN) are pleased to present Northern Tier, an exhibition of oil paintings by Finnish American artist Eric Aho. The exhibit will be on display from September 18 to November 13, 2025, at the Finlandia Art Gallery, located in the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. A reception for the artist will take place on Thursday, October 9, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., with an artist talk beginning at 7:20 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will open a new exhibition titled “Gales of November: Shipwrecks on Lake Superior” at noon on Friday, Sept. 19, in its gallery in Gries Hall. From the earliest days of sailing vessels on Lake Superior, November has taken its toll on the maritime trade. This exhibit will look at some of the more famous and fascinating shipwrecks that led to either the disappearance of a vessel or its eventual destruction. Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present Into the Woods, a fantasy musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Sept 25-27 and Oct 2-4. This “darkly enchanting” production blends familiar fairy tale characters with profound themes of desire, consequence and hope. “Into the Woods begins with characters everyone recognizes, like Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood, but Act II gets, as most Sondheim pieces do, much more mature and more personal,” said director Paul Truckey. “Everybody goes into the woods at some point in their life, and this show explores what happens when you do.” MUNISING, Mich.- Sand Point Road will be temporarily closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic east of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore boundary from approximately Oct. 2 through Oct. 8, 2025, for a culvert replacement project. Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host a Mobile Food Pantry. Taking place on Thursday, October 9. Food distribution will begin at 10:00am and continue while supplies last or until 11:30am. Food will be available for approximately 550 families. Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will host its production of The Rocky Horror Show Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 23-25, in Forest Roberts Theatre. The show will be directed by NMU Theatre and Dance alumna Maisie James (’25) under the mentorship of assistant professor Kaitlyn Frotton. This cult classic humorously pays homage to B movies from the science fiction and horror genres spanning the 1930s to the early 1960s. The plot follows a newly engaged couple who, after being caught in a storm, find themselves at the mansion of a flamboyant transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There, they encounter his latest creation, Rocky-a Northern Michigan University will host the 2025 Indigenous Perspectives Symposium on Food, a full-day gathering focused on uplifting Indigenous food systems, cultural knowledge and community health. The event takes place Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Northern Center on campus. This symposium brings together Indigenous knowledge keepers, tribal food sovereignty leaders, scholars, students and community members to engage in deep dialogue and hands-on learning. Through presentations, workshops, panels and culinary experiences, the event explores the living relationships between land, food, identity and resilience. Join us for a group hike on October 30th! Come hike with us to the majestic Bareback Mountain. The hike begins at the parking area on the northeast end of Harlow Lake and immediately begins to ascend the granite outcroppings that define hiking in the Marquette area. The trail provides beautiful vistas of Harlow Lake, Hogback Mountain, Lake Superior and the valley below as it progresses to the mountain summit.
