These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well, especially since the War of 1812. Heritage Center at NMU will open a new exhibition July 9 that features the work of one of the U.P.’s most prolific photographers. It is titled “Munising in Black & White: The Photographs of Mary Jayne Hallifax.” She was an in-demand commercial photographer who also captured numerous candid images of her hometown over seven decades. Music on Third will be making its return to the Third Street Corridor this month and will be bringing some needed changes to help make it a safer and more enjoyable event for everyone. The first Music on Third of 2026 is scheduled for Thursday, July 16th, from 6 – 9 pm. 19 events,July 27-31 Northern Michigan University will host the 2026 BIPOC Outdoors Summit & Rest Retreat July 27-31. While the events are designed to center the experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Color in outdoor spaces, everyone is welcome to participate. The emphasis is on creating an environment that fosters belonging, reflection and engagement with nature. Programming will include outdoor adventures, skills workshops and discussions focused on leadership, wellness and community-building. Attendees will also have access to restorative spaces intended for reflection, connection and self-care. The summit July 27-28 will feature keynote speakers, breakout sessions and local excursions. Block lodging A pre-scheduled joint training exercise involving U.S. military personnel, law enforcement agencies, and emergency response partners will take place July 27-30. Michigan State Police (MSP) personnel and resources will be participating alongside our local, state, and federal partners. Troopers and other local law enforcement will remain available to respond to routine calls for service, public safety needs, and 911 emergencies throughout the exercise.
